UKS2 Athletics Lesson Plans

Our athletics lesson plans for Upper Key Stage 2 focus on developing advanced running, jumping, and throwing skills while building on prior knowledge and increasing technical accuracy.

Pupils refine sprinting technique (including pacing, stride length, and acceleration), develop endurance through middle-distance running, and improve jumping skills such as long jump and high jump with an emphasis on take-off, flight, and landing.

Throwing activities progress from basic control to more powerful and accurate techniques in events like javelin, discus, and shot put using age-appropriate equipment. The lessons are sequenced to move from skill acquisition to application in competitive and personal best contexts, encouraging pupils to analyse performance, set targets, and demonstrate sportsmanship.

Our high-quality athletics lesson plans for Upper Key Stage 2 are supported by clear, well-structured teaching resources that enhance both delivery and pupil understanding.

Essential supporting documents include knowledge organisers that outline key concepts, techniques, and rules for events such as sprinting, jumping, and throwing, helping pupils retain and recall information effectively.

In addition, PE-specific vocabulary lists are included to develop pupils’ language around athletics, introducing terms like pace, acceleration, trajectory, and take-off.

These resources not only strengthen subject knowledge and literacy within PE but also support consistent teaching, assessment for learning, and progression across lessons, making them vital for our comprehensive primary PE scheme of work.
