The Power of Storytelling in EYFS PE

Incorporating stories into Physical Education (PE) for early years children is a highly effective way to engage young minds and bodies. Storytelling not only captures children’s attention but also enhances their physical, emotional, and cognitive development. Research shows that narrative-based learning can significantly improve engagement and retention in young learners (Bruner, 1986), making it an ideal approach in early childhood settings.

Young children are naturally imaginative and respond well to playful, imaginative contexts. When PE lessons are framed as stories — such as going on a jungle adventure, flying to space, or saving animals in a forest — children are more motivated to participate. This kind of imaginative play is known to promote physical activity in a meaningful and enjoyable way (Whitebread, 2012).

Stories also help children make sense of movement. Instead of abstract instructions like “run in a straight line,” a teacher might say “run across the bridge before it disappears!” This narrative structure gives purpose to the movement, making it easier for children to understand and remember. According to Pellegrini and Smith (1998), play and narrative learning foster cognitive and motor development, particularly when they involve symbolic thinking and role-play.

Furthermore, storytelling can support inclusive practice. For children who may lack confidence or have limited language skills, a story creates a safe and familiar environment. It reduces performance anxiety and encourages participation through play. Vygotsky (1978) emphasized the importance of social interaction and imaginative play in developing higher mental functions — a principle clearly reflected in story-based PE.

In summary, integrating stories into early years PE lessons isn’t just fun — it’s backed by educational theory and research. It enriches physical activity with imagination, improves learning outcomes, and helps build positive relationships with movement from the very start.
