Gymnastics – Glossary
Aerial: A cartwheel or somersault performed without hands touching the ground.
Arabesque: A balance position where one leg is extended behind the body at a right angle.
Arched position: A body position where the back is curved backwards.
Back Handspring: A move where a gymnast jumps backwards onto their hands and then pushes off the ground to land on their feet.
Balance Beam: A narrow, horizontal beam elevated above the ground used for performing routines.
Bars: Apparatus consisting of the uneven bars or parallel bars.
Cartwheel: A sideways rotation of the body with hands and feet touching the ground alternately.
Cast: A movement where a gymnast swings their body away from the apparatus.
Chalk: Used by gymnasts to keep their hands dry for better grip.
Dismount: The act of getting off an apparatus, typically with a flourish.
Double Back: A somersault with two complete backward rotations.
Dynamic: Movements that involve speed, strength, and power.
Execution: The quality of the performance, including precision and form.
Extension: Fully straightening a joint or body part.
Floor Exercise: A routine performed on a spring floor that involves tumbling, dance, and acrobatics.
Flyaway: A dismount from the high bar involving a back somersault.
Forward Roll: A roll where the gymnast moves head over heels in a forward direction.
Giant Swing: A full rotation around the bar with arms extended.
Grip: The way a gymnast holds onto an apparatus.
Handspring: A move where the gymnast springs from the hands to the feet.
Handstand: A vertical position where the gymnast balances on their hands with the body extended upward.
Inclined Mat: A wedge-shaped mat used for practicing skills.
Inverted: Upside down position.
Kip: A skill used to mount the bars, transitioning from below to above the bar.
Layout: A position where the body is fully extended during a skill.
Leap: A jump from one foot to the other, often involving a split in the air.
Mount: The act of getting onto an apparatus to start a routine.
Pike Position: A position where the body is bent at the hips while the legs are kept straight.
Parallel Bars: Two horizontal bars set at the same height, used for performing routines.
Pommel Horse: An apparatus with two handles (pommels) used for performing swings and circles.
Roundoff: A move similar to a cartwheel but ends with both feet landing together, often used to transition into other skills.
Split: A position where the legs are extended in opposite directions in a straight line.
Somersault: A forward or backward roll in the air with complete rotation.
Straddle: A position where the legs are spread wide apart.
Tuck Position: A position where the knees are bent and drawn to the chest.
Tumbling: Acrobatic skills performed in sequence, usually on the floor or a spring track.
Twist: A rotation of the body along the vertical axis.
Vault: An event where gymnasts sprint down a runway, leap onto a springboard, and perform aerial skills over a vaulting table.
Wolf Jump: A jump with one leg bent and the other extended, resembling a wolf’s stance.
